In 2007, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner took office as Argentina’s first directly elected female President. In 2011 she won the reelection which she held until 2015.  

Fernández attended the National University of La Plata where she studied law. Fernández de Kirchner was a provincial delegate to the Justicialist (Peronist) Party (PJ) convention in 1985 and was later elected to the provincial legislature. Fernández de Kirchner twice represented Santa Cruz in the Argentine Senate (1995–97, 2001–05). She also served (1997–2001) in the Chamber of Deputies. Additionally, Fernández represented Buenos Aires in the Argentine Senate twice, from 2005 to 2007 and 2017 to 2019.

In 2009, Forbes ranked Fernández the 11th Most Powerful Woman in the World.In 2016, she founded a think tank named Patria Institute. She also wrote a book called Sinceramente, which was published in 2019. On 27 October 2019, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was elected Vice President, making her the first former head of state to assume the Argentine vice presidency.
