President Maia Sandu assumed office on December 20, 2020, and was reelected to a second term in 2024. She is the first woman to serve as President in Malta. 

Sandu attended school at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova (ASEM) from 1989 to 1994, the Academy of Public Administration (AAP) in Chișinău from 1995 to 1998, and graduated from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2010. President Sandu speaks Romanian, Russian, Spanish, and English. Prior to her political career, Sandu worked as an Adviser to the Executive Director of the World Bank from 2010 to 2012.

President Sandu’s political career started in 2012, when she became the Minister of Education - a role she held until 2015. In 2015, Sandu started a platform that evolved into the political party known as the Partidul Acțiune și Solidaritate (Party of Action and Solidarity). She served as President of this party from 2016 until 2020. In 2019, Sandu was elected to serve as Prime Minister of Moldova. 

After the outbreak of the 2022 Russian invasion in Ukraine, Sandu signed on 3 March 2022 the application for EU membership, together with Igor Grosu, the President of Moldovan Parliament and Natalia Gavrilița, the Prime Minister of Moldova.
