Sophie Wilmès

Prime Minister of Belgium (2019-2020)

Sophie Wilmès served as Prime Minister of Belgium from 2019 to 2020. She is the first woman to hold the position.

 Wilmès was born in Ixelles in 1975. Wilmès went on to earn degrees in applied communication from the Institute for Higher Social Communication Studies (IHECS) and later a degree in Financial Management from Saint-Louis University, Brussels. She worked as a financial officer at the European Commission and later worked as an economic and financial adviser at a law firm.

Her political career began in 2000 when Wilmès became a councillor in Uccle. From 2006 to 2014, Wilmès was First Alderwoman of Finance, Budget, Francophone Education, Communication, and Local Businesses for the town of Sint-Genesius-Rode. In 2014, she was elected as a member of the Chamber of Representatives. She held the role until 2015, when Wilmès was appointed Minister of Budget. In 2018, she became Minister of Budget, Civil Service, National Lottery, and Scientific Policy, a role which she held until she became Prime Minister.

Wilmès was appointed deputy prime minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Foreign Trade, and Federal Cultural Institutions immediately following the conclusion of her term as Prime Minister. From 2022 to 2024, she served as a Member of Parliament in the Chamber of Representatives before becoming a Member of the European Parliament for Belgium in 2024.
